Dental Fillings

Did you know ?

Dental fillings are not just for repairing cavities. They can also be used to fix cracked, chipped, or worn teeth. Fillings can also be used to close gaps between teeth.

The Dental Filling Procedure

Consultation

We will assess your needs during a consultation and take x-rays to determine if dental fillings are the right treatment for you. If your tooth decay is severe, you may require a root canal.

Preparation

Your dentist will numb your mouth with a local anesthetic. Once the area is numb, your dentist will use a drill to remove the decay from your tooth. The area will then be cleaned and prepared for the filling.

Placement

The filling material is placed in the cavity and shaped to fit the tooth. Once the filling is in place, it will be hardened with a special light.

Recovery

You may experience some sensitivity after the procedure, but this should go away within a few days. Avoid chewing on hard foods or using your teeth to open things for at least 24 hours.

Types Of Fillings

Composite Resin Fillings

Composite resin fillings are made from a mixture of glass and plastic. They are tooth-colored and can be matched to the color of your natural teeth. Composite resin fillings are less visible than other types of fillings, making them a good option for front teeth.

Ceramic Inlays

Ceramic inlays – these are a type of filling material that are made out of tooth coloured porcelain. They are used to restore missing or decayed tooth structure in a less invasive way than a crown. Ceramic fillings are durable and long-lasting. However, they are more visible than composite resin fillings and may not be the optimal option for front teeth.

Did you know?

Dental fillings are designed to last for many years. However, they may eventually need to be replaced due to wear and tear. Ceramic fillings typically last for 10 to 15 years, while composite resin fillings usually last for 5 to 10 years.
